Good long weekend.. Took the red eye to Cancun Friday night and arrived around 6:30 AM. Saturday morning. I was going through immigration and hit the red light for the first time in about 15 to 18 trips in the past 10 years going to Mexico. Their system is green light, go through enjoy your holiday and if you hit a red light they pull you in and interrogate you. I was laughing because I said to the girl that I have been coming here for 10 years and I was always wondering what happens if I got a red light. She asked me to unzip my bag, I said no problem, I am not carrying a speedo (just kidding I did not say that). I can hear my two daughters Tiffany and Crystal now,” You’re gross dad!” She had a quick look and a laugh at my stupid jokes and told me to enjoy my holiday. A new lesson I learnt is that the bus going to Cancun does not start until 8 a.m. so I waited for an hour talking with a young lady from Saskatchewan, that lives in Mexico running a business in the winters down there. Then I got to the hotel in Cancun around 9 a.m. and they didn’t have a room ready for me, so they allowed me to store my bag at the hotel and gave me a towel and said just hang out at the beach until around one. Big mistake! I got into a book in the sun and then fell asleep, man I got sooo burnt. Got my room around one and headed to the supermarket because I had a kitchenette in the room, yes for $38 USD a night in the hotel zone (great deal). I still had three full days there and saw a couple of my Mexican friends and still made it to Isla Mujeres and Playa Del Carmen. Some people think I am rich because I travel so much. I’m going to say, not at all and I am far from being poor too. I do sometimes stay at 5 star resorts, but I know when and where the good deals are on, for instance I see people paying way too much during high season Christmas/ Spring Break. I can see why they go on one holiday a year. I will spend about the same as they do on about 3 to 4 holidays a year and most will be in a 3 to 4 star resort, hotel or hostels but I prefer them over a 5 star because then I appreciate my home and my own bed even more when I get home. Cheers Pete http://www.travelcheapwithpete.com/blog.html My cheap hotel in Cancun I’m out of here (Calgary)! They are calling for snow again this weekend and I have a couple of buddy passes that I have to use up. The weather looks good in Cancun, I’m taking the red eye Friday night that way I’m saving on accommodations and have the whole day Saturday there. I can sleep well on the plane, coming back Monday or Tuesday night. I’m going back to my cheap hotel the Imperial Laguna Cancun hotel in the hotel zone for only $40,00 a night. A funny thing happened today as I was going up to the money exchange, I got a phone call “You have just won a trip to the Bahamas” of course I hung up and told the girl in front of me from the money exchange and she said o.k where are you off to this time the Bahamas? I said maybe Vegas because I’m feeling lucky today, but I will buy Mexican money too. Tomorrow in Canada the Lotto 649 is up to a record of $55 million, so get out and buy your tickets today and if you win don’t forget where you got the idea from to buy your tickets: today is your lucky day…. My friend Margaret’s 100th birthday I wanted to stay here last weekend as my friend/neighbor turned 100 and I had the privilege to take her to her birthday party with about three hundred friends and her family attending. I would not have missed it for the world (vacation) last week; yes I got to take her in my new/old corvette convertible and we had light snow/rain but she still wanted the top down on the convertible, she was on global tv that night and on the front page of the Calgary sun newspaper they had a small sample picture to go to page 10, read the story, just hit this link, blue area. |
